Bridge of Hope volunteer
Scott Shults recently received special recognition from
the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County for raising the
most money by a single individual in the recent 10k Human
Race Fun Run & Walk fundraising event. Scott raised more
than $5,400 for the Bridge of Hope Outreach by collecting
pledges while sitting in front of various stores. Part of
the money Scott raised is going to be used to provide
scholarships to Joni And Friends Family Retreats, a camping
experience for families and individuals affected by
disability. Scott was able to complete the whole race in his
wheelchair!
We
first met Scott many years ago when he was a resident at one
of the nursing homes where we serve. Scott has been able to
move from the nursing home into a lovely home where he lives
with four other young people who also have traumatic brain
injury.

Scott became disabled
thirteen years ago when his motorcycle was struck by a van.
He was in a coma, and not expected to live. Scott says
sometimes he thinks life handed him a raw deal and says he
sometimes feels sorry for himself, but not too often.
"Actually, my life has
changed for the good. I am happy as I can be," he says.
We are proud of Scott, and
so thankful for the help he provides the Bridge of Hope!
